When His Patient Crawled Through the Door in Sciatica Pain Agony, This Doctor Immediately Told Him to do this!

One of the most common condition which chiropractors see in their offices is sciatica. What is very usual in North America is to lower the back pain with radiation.

Actually, this doctor had a patient whose pain was so excruciating that he had to crawl to get to his office.

What is Sciatica, its causes and how to eliminate it?  First, we must understand the word sciatica.

Sciatica is a term which is used to describe a pain which starts in the lower back and continues down the buttock, then into the thigh, the lower leg and foot. These symptoms may happen as a result of a compressed or pinched nerve in the lower back which leads to feeling of pain, weakness and numbness in the leg. The nerve can be pinched on various locations.
The most usual cause of sciatica is lumbar disc herniation. Constant mechanical stress to the spinal disc can result in tearing of the outer layers of the disc thus allowing the inner substance to herniate, or move out of its circled space.
Lumbar disc herniation mostly happens at the weakest disc point, which is the area where the root of the nerve exits from the spinal canal. When a disc herniation happens in this place, it usually directly contacts the root of the nerve, activates the nerve thus causing pain and numbness in the leg.
There are a number of other conditions that can copy the lumbar disc herniation effects including piriformis syndrome, a condition in which the muscle tightens and compresses the sciatic nerve when it passes through the gluteal region, and degenerative disc disease.

How to treat Sciatica?

What should be performed first is conservative care, and surgery should be the last resort.

1. Ice/Heat Therapy

If the stages of sciatica are early, using ice or heat packs can help in reducing the pain and inflammation. Heat loosens the muscle while ice reduces swelling and inflammation.

2. Physiotherapy and  Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors as well as physiotherapists use a variety of treatments to help reduce pain and improve motion. Some of these treatments are electrotherapy, joint mobilization, ultrasound, soft tissue therapy, exercises and manipulation.

3. McKenzie Exercises

These exercises are effective in reducing and centralizing the pain and they can be prescribed by physiotherapists and chiropractors.

4. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Acupuncture is inserting a small needles through the skin into the muscles at particular points along with the meridian channels. These needles lead to micro-trauma to the muscles resulting in the release of endorphins. These hormones calm the muscle and nerve pain.

5. Spinal Traction and Decompression Therapy

There are therapists which use therapy which is manual and instrument assisted to spread the lumbar vertebrae and to let the disc material to become re-absorbed into the outer disc material.

6. Pain Medications and Anti-inflammatory Supplements

You can ask your physician about anti-inflammatory medications and pain killers if nothing else works. However, you should be cautious when taking these medications since they have been connected to heart problems.
Supplements which are anti-inflammatory, such as fish oil and curcumin are excellent natural alternatives.
